Boulder to Boulder 2011

Last weekend was the he Boulder Boulder race. This year the event hosted 55,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers of all ages and is is the single largest timed race in the U.S. and the fifth largest road race in the world! If you are from Boulder or the surrounding area you know that people talk about the race for months prior to the event! We train and prepare for weeks before the big Memorial Day race. Then the week of the event the entire city is a buzz! This isn’t as much of a race as it is a culture! The costumes! The music! The fun!!! It really kicks off the summer for us here on the Front Range.

This year the millionth Bolder Boulder participant strode into the stadium! Army veteran Mieszka Laczek-Johnson was the 20,801 person to cross the finish line and millionth ever! Mieszka, a 34-year-old, had served in Baghdad for three years. In 2002 her foot was injured in the line of duty forcing her to re-learn how to walk! Eventually trained for and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2009. This was her first Bolder Boulder and she ran with photos of eight fallen soldiers on her back; a touching way to remember her comrades on Memorial Day.
